First Tee of Harrisonburg

Welcome to the First Tee of Harrisonburg. The First Tee of Harrisonburg is a youth development program that combines golf skills and life skills to help develop the character of the youth in our community.  Please visit www.thefirstteeharrisonburg.org for information about this valuable program, designed for all youth between the ages of 5 and 17 years of age.

ABOUT THE NATIONAL ORGANIZATION

In 1997, the World Golf Foundation created The First Tee, an organization designed to make golf accessible and affordable for all youth. Currently, The First Tee has over 200 facilities/affiliates in operation worldwide and has impacted the lives of over two million youth.

The First Tee uses golf as a means to promote character development in the youth of our communities. As stated in the following mission statement, this program allows our children to be introduced to the game of golf and the many benefits it includes.

MISSION STATEMENT OF THE FIRST TEE

To impact the lives of young people around the world by creating affordable and accessible golf facilities primarily to serve those who have not previously had exposure to the game and its positive values.

Through The First Tee program, students will be introduced to nine core values set forth by The First Tee. They are as follows:

  • RESPECT
  • INTEGRITY
  • HONESTY
  • RESPONSIBILITY
  • JUDGMENT
  • SPORTSMANSHIP
  • COURTESY
  • CONFIDENCE
  • PERSEVERANCE

The program uses a combination of golf skills and life skills to help strengthen these values in our youth. In addition to the nine core values, First Tee participants are given the opportunity to develop communication skills, learn to overcome obstacles, begin setting and achieving goals, understand wellness and nutrition, while having fun playing golf. While each First Tee facility is unique, the goal remains the same; using golf to impact the lives of the youth in our communities and to help provide them with valuable skills for life.

THE FIRST TEE OF HARRISONBURG

MISSION STATEMENT: TO IMPACT THE LIVES OF YOUTH IN OUR COMMUNITY AND TO USE GOLF AS A MEANS TO HELP DEVELOP THE CHARACTER AND LEADERSHIP SKILLS OF OUR YOUTH.

Our program services the youth of Harrisonburg, Rockingham County and adjoining counties (Augusta, Shenandoah, etc.). Youth ages 5-17 are welcome to participate in our program. In 2003, we had over 300 participants in our program with over 100 registered in the program. In 2004, we hope to see these numbers increase through additional programs with Boys and Girls Club of Harrisonburg/Rockingham, Big Brothers/Big Sisters in Harrisonburg/Rockingham, local schools and homeschoolers, and Staunton/Augusta YMCA.

The average cost per participant is $50 per level; therefore, we ask that those who are able to contribute, to do so. For those who are unable to contribute financially, our fundraising efforts will cover the costs. As a non-profit organization, we welcome financial contributions as well as any golf equipment. Your contributions are tax deductible (check with your local tax expert for restrictions).

Our goal at The First Tee of Harrisonburg is to allow all children to benefit from the game of golf. To ensure this, we want to assure you that no youth will be turned away due to financial restrictions.
